Bat 17 is located in downtown Evanston, just across the street from the Davis stop on the L’s Purple Line. While it is just a couple blocks from Northwestern’s lakefront campus, Bat is definitely more than your typical college bar. The food at the tavern (Bat stands for Benson Avenue Tavern) is unparalleled in the area and the ambience is hip and intimate. It is a great place to grab a beer and throw down some wings and nachos while watching a game, but it is equally suitable for a fun date night. Definitely worth a quick trip north from Downtown Chicago – if you catch a Purple Line Express train during rush hour you can get to the restaurant from the Loop in 30 minutes or so.

What To Order

Stacked high with sliced skirt steak covered in BBQ sauce, fried onion strings, white cheddar cheese, and chipotle mayo, and sitting on griddled sourdough bread made by a local bakery, the Takin’ Care of Business at Bat is the best sandwich I have ever eaten. Bat also has great burgers, sides, upscale bar food, appetizers, cookies, breakfast items, and a wide selection of craft beers.
