Barbeque and craft beer tend to get most of tourists’ attention when it comes to Austin’s food and beverage scene, but Lonesome Dove sets itself apart with modern, sophisticated cuisine in a one-of-a-kind setting.

What To Order

Start with The Willie cocktail at the bar as you begin to immerse yourself in Lonesome Dove’s unique atmosphere. The rye-based drink is presented under a glass case, rinsing in the smoke of oak chips while you watch the small plumes swirl in the container.

Once seated, adventurous diners should try the wild game fettine trio. The menu is seasonal, but if the lobster hushpuppies are available, they aren’t to be missed. I savored the elk loin as a main course, prepared with hefty hen-of-the-woods mushrooms and a sweet contrast of candied grapes. I complemented the meal with a glass of Tannat by a Texas winery.  Sides are family style, so depending on the size of your group, try the burnt carrots and crispy Brussels.

Additional Tips

Be sure to have your server explain the portioning for the first course; the price reflected on the menu is for a few pieces, depending on the item.

Skip dessert and head to the trendy Firehouse speakeasy lounge, just a few blocks away, for a night cap prepared by a skillful mixologist.
